Giants return home following win at San Francisco

The Giants may be unbeatable on the road, but they’re happy to finally be home.

“Your @giants have landed and return home as NFC champions!” the team wrote early Monday on its official Twitter account.

Defensive end Justin Tuck, on his personal Twitter account, posted, “Just landed back home. But I feel like I’m still flying.”

In another tweet, Victor Cruz posted the message Giants fans can’t hear enough: “Super Bowl bound baby!!!!”

Giants players were taken from the airport to team headquarters near MetLife Stadium, where the players got into their cars and went home for the day.

The Giants defeated the San Francisco 49ers 20-17 in overtime Sunday in the NFC Championship, setting up a Super Bowl rematch in two weeks against the New England Patriots in Indianapolis. The teams last met in the NFL title game in 2008, when the Giants ended the Patriots’ bid for a perfect season.

Five plays after the 49ers’ Kyle Williams fumbled a punt, Lawrence Tynes kicked a 31-yard field goal in overtime, sending the Giants to Super Bowl XLVI.

“Guys never quit, never ever have any doubts,” quarterback Eli Manning said. “They keep believing and fighting until the very end no matter what the circumstances are. I think everybody knew we were going to get a break, we were going to get a chance to win this game.”

In another tight contest in this decades-old postseason rivalry, both defenses made key stops before the Giants capitalized on a rare mistake in San Francisco’s resurgent season. Williams’ blunder put the Giants in perfect position for another sensational finish in a season full of them.

The first three possessions in overtime ended in punts before Williams fumbled. The Giants won it moments later and silenced — for good this time — the towel-waving, poncho-wearing sellout crowd at cold and rainy Candlestick Park.

“It was one of those situations where I tried to turn it upfield and it just didn’t work out,” Williams said.
