From experts to the unemployed, panel grades Obama’s speech

Political experts weigh in on Obama’s State of the Union Address:

BILL O’REILLY, GOP consultant

What did you think of speech?

“It was a nakedly political snooze. It was less a State of the Union and more the state of President Obama’s campaign themes.”

Best line/moment?

“His referencing the flag given to him by Seal Team Six in his closing call for unity in Congress . . . “It was the only powerful line of the night.”

Economic fairness/policy proposals?

“He sounded his standard class-war themes, but they lacked passion and seemed to fall flat.”

David Birdsell, Baruch College Dean of Public Affairs

Speech?

“This was the most important speech of Obama’s term and by a good margin, his best. He hit everything he needed to hit. He transcended narrow partisanship repeatedly by referring to consensus outside Washington, to ideas supported by large majorities of Americans.”

Best line:

References to troops working for a common goal without regard to politics or personality.

Economic fairness/proposals:

“He made the case for higher taxes on very high earners effectively and vividly. He presented the issue as a choice between social programs and debt reductions that most Americans support versus protections for those who can afford a larger contribution.”

Grade: A

Patrick Jenkins, Democratic consultant

Speech?

“President Obama started the “Common Sense Tea Party’’ tonight. The speech contained a tremendous amount of action items that rise above partisanship. It was the perfect mix of substance and politics.”

Best line:

“The state of our union is getting stronger. And we’ve come too far to turn back now.”

Economic fairness/proposals:

“His use of lines like ‘…our way of life will only endure if we feel that same sense of shared responsibility’ put in perspective for the American people what is at stake.”

Grade: A+.

Doug Muzzio, Baruch poli-sci professor

Speech?

“Presidential and inspiring and combative and challenging. Trumanesque. A rousing campaign speech.

Best line:

“Everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and plays by the same set of rules.”

Economic fairness/proposals:

“Substantive weakness: lots of wishin’ and hopin’; lack of dollars connected to proposals

Bruno Soto, 30, Bronx, unemployed

Speech?

“It showed the reason why President Obama got elected in 2008. He was aggressive and clear . . . I was wondering where this side of him has been hiding over the last 3 years.”

Best line/moment

Hugging Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

“Turn our unemployment system into a re-employment system.’’

Economic fairness/proposals:

Good sounding potential solutions with regard to what could be done to repair our economy. I would have liked to hear more detail.
