‘The Artist’ wins feature film prize at Directors Guild Awards

LOS ANGELES — The almost silent, black and white French film “The Artist” continued its dazzling awards season success at Saturday night’s Directors Guild of America Awards, with director Michel Hazanavicius receiving the event’s feature film award.

Hazanavicius received his award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Feature Film, beating out a field featuring Woody Allen (“Midnight in Paris”), David Fincher (“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”), Alexander Payne (“The Descendants”) and Martin Scorsese (“Hugo”), according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Robert B. Weide won the Comedy Series gong for the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” episode “Palestinian Chicken.” Other nominees in the comedy category included David Steinberg for “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” Fred Savage and Michael Spiller for “Modern Family” and Don Scardino for “30 Rock.”

In the Movies for Television and Mini-Series category, John Cassar won for “The Kennedys,” while the Dramatic Series winner was Patty Jenkins for the pilot episode of “The Killing.”

Kelsey Grammer hosted the DGA’s 64th annual awards, at which Ed Sherin received the 2012 Honorary Life Member Award, Katy Garretson was awarded the 2012 Frank Capra Achievement Award and Dennis Mazzocco was named the recipient of the 2012 Franklin J. Schaffner Achievement Award.
