Santorum cancels events after ill daughter admitted to hospital

WASHINGTON — Rick Santorum was forced to suspend his Florida campaign plans for a day yesterday after his 3-year-old daughter, who suffers from a genetic disorder, was admitted to a Philadelphia hospital.

Isabella Santorum, 3, has Trisomy 18, an extra chromosone that causes such symptoms as heart abnormalities, kidney malfunctioning and mental deficiencies.

Santorum, who has been running third in Florida polls, canceled an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” after his daughter was hospitalized with pneumonia in both lungs.

But by last night, he said he’d likely be back on the trail today because Isabella had made a “miraculous turnaround’’ and is expected to be released in two to four days.

Tomorrow’s Florida primary could prove to be a last stand for the ultra-conservative former senator.
