Perfect Sense

Would the Mayans have predicted the end of the world in 2012 if they’d known it would inspire not only “The Tree of Life’’ and “Melancholia’’ but an endless supply of more dreary depictions of end-times like this one?

David Mackenzie’s low-budget film delivers the apocalypse by way of an epidemic, but anyone expecting another “Contagion’’ is plumb out of luck. What you get instead is Ewan McGregor as a morose yet randy cook and hottie Eva Green as his latest hookup, an epidemiologist.

In “Perfect Sense,’’ people around the world progressively lose their senses of smell, taste, hearing and, finally, sight. Too bad the filmmakers never seem to have had a sense of humor in the first place.
