Boy, 6, dies after taking methadone

Authorities have cut loose the mother of a six-year-old boy who died after he was fed a dose of methadone, authorities said.

Police arrested Raquel DeLeon and charged her with reckless endangerment on Monday, cops said.

DeLeon, 36, allegedly hid her methadone inside a DayQuil bottle in their apartment on E. 147th Street in the South Bronx, police said.

When her six-year-old son, Carlos Rios Jr. fell ill on Saturday, his father gave him a teaspoon of the liquid, believing it was cough medicine, police said.

Soon after administering the dose, the boy complained of dizziness. The father told the boy to lie down but became concerned after his son became unresponsive.

The father immediately called 911 and EMS rushed Rios Jr. to Lincoln Hospital. He was later transferred to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital where he died.

A Bronx District Attorney spokesman said any prosecution has been deferred pending the results of an autopsy.

DeLeon has two prior drug busts, police said.
