SI doc charged with fraud over impotence claims

Lots of guys lie about their sexual prowess — but not many are indicted for it.

A Staten Island ophthalmologist who claimed to have been rendered sexually impotent following a car accident has been charged with fraud.

Brooklyn federal prosecutors say that Joseph Mermelstein, a surgeon, collected millions of dollars from insurance companies after falsely claiming he could no longer do the dirty because of injuries he suffered in an auto accident.

The physician also claimed to have suffered diminished motor control in his left hand, which he said left him incapable of performing ophthalmological operations, according to an indictment handed up by a Brooklyn grand jury.

But the feds say that after the Oct. 2003 accident, Mermelstein was not only sexually active, he also performed “numerous” surgeries as part of his medical practice.
