5 gardens to get your green on

So winter’s pretty much been a bust this far, but it’s still winter – see any leaves on the trees out there? Didn’t think so. For a quick fix of green, why not take it inside?

#1 Eden Project England

A decommissioned quarry in way-out-there Cornwall houses the world’s largest indoor jungle, not to mention some gorgeous Mediterranean gardens, all under iconic geodesic domes.

#2 Longwood Gardens Pennsylvania

This historic playground of the DuPont family, near Philadelphia, is one of the world’s biggest botanic gardens; during winter, an almost-endless string of temperature-controlled conservatories offers a crash course in the flora of pretty much the entire planet.

#3 United States Botanic Garden Washington, DC

Built in 1933 by the architect of the Capitol and beautifully restored in 2001, this lesser-known gem tucked away on the southern side of the National Mall offers a chance to disappear out of a DC winter and into the tropics (and beyond).

#4 National Aviary Pittsburgh

Pink flamingos? In Pittsburgh? In February? You bet. This outstanding (recently renovated) indoor bird zoo & garden – featuring over 600 birds of more than 200 different species – is just one more of those who-knew’s that make this city such surprising fun.

#5 Garfield Park Conservatory Chicago

More than a century old, this 4-plus-acre find tucked away in a working-class section of the West Side feels like a locals-only secret; a 2011 hailstorm caused tremendous damage, but they’re up and running while repairs continue. A must on any winter Windy City itinerary.
