Clergy group demand names be released in Bronx shooting

A group of clergy, including civil rights activist the Rev. Al Sharpton, demanded Monday that the police department reveal the names of the officers who broke into a home and killed an unarmed man during a drug investigation.

Youths in the black community are being killed by “the people who are supposed to protect them,” the Rev. Herbert Daughtry said. He and other leaders held a news conference in front of the Bronx district attorney’s office to seek the identities of the officers.

Sharpton said the future of New York City will be determined by how authorities handle the case of 18-year-old Ramarley Graham. Graham was fatally shot on Feb. 2 in his bathroom during a police drug probe of his largely Caribbean neighborhood of Williamsbridge, in the Bronx.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly has ordered a review of the street narcotics division following the shooting. Sharpton also demanded a federal investigation.

Authorities say police mistakenly believed Graham had a gun when he was chased into his second-floor home and shot in the bathroom.

Police say a bag of marijuana was found in the toilet, suggesting Graham was trying to flush it away before the gunfire erupted.

An officer and his sergeant are on desk duty while the district attorney weighs whether to charge them.
