Mike: Apple core of digital tech

The Big Apple is inching closer to becoming the nation’s digital-media hub, Mayor Bloomberg announced yesterday as he introduced the leaders of the city’s new high-tech college campus.

He said Daniel Huttenlocher would be the dean and Cathy Dove vice president of the city’s Technion-Cornell Innovation Institute, which will be housed at a temporary campus until the school is built on Roosevelt Island in five years.

Bloomberg said the new school will partner with new digital-media companies that have been expanding rapidly in the city.

“It is our hope and expectation that these new companies will join the Tumblrs and foursquares of our city, bolstering our reputation as a center of innovation and propelling us past Silicon Valley as the capital of digital technology,” said Bloomberg at Tumblr’s offices.

Bloomberg also announced the city’s new Twitter handle, @nycgov, and Facebook page, nycgov.

The administration also created a badge for foursquare, a social-media site for smartphones that allows users to virtually “check in” at places.
