Geoffrey Mac

This show was just fun. Geoffrey Mac’s ensembles are wacky high-end attire for arty club kids — or aggressively costumed performers Lady Gaga, L’il Kim, and Britney Spears, who Mac has also dressed.

(Unsurprisingly, Patricia Field’s store was the first to place an order with him ten years ago when he first launched his business in Chicago.)

All the pieces had amusing names, like the “Skeletal Minidress” or the “Arius Blouse,” for example, which was a black-and-white silk blouse with stripes. The colors were primaries mixed with black, the shapes of the shoulders angular, sometimes Jetsons-style, and the hemlines super-short.

There were some moments that called Gaga to mind in the form of dresses with what looked like truncated cones protruding from the hips. Yet Mac also can also reign himself in, like the camel sheath dress with leather detail at the top. There were also fun, yet completely wearable, wool babydoll dresses in camel, teal and red, edged in black piping or leather.

Our favorite? A minidress with a yellow sharp-shouldered bodice and a latex skirt with oversized graphics in blue, white, black and red. It a hit-or-miss Fashion Week, it was refreshing to see a designer so unapologetic and free.
