NYC non-‘AA’ girls basketball rankings

Wings started the season at No. 1 in these rankings and they enter the postseason there, too.

Staten Island Academy drops to second after losing to Tottenville. The Tigers begin their defense of their NYSAISAA Class C crown this week with the likes of Poly Prep, Horace Mann and Fieldston looking to take it. The Brooklyn/Queens Division II playoffs and the PSAL Class A tournament also get underway. More changes could be in the future.

Here are this week’s rankings:

1. Wings Academy (19-2) (Last week: 2)

Wings finds itself back at the top of these rankings, kind of like how the Wings were on top of PSAL Class A last year. Tyler Moses, Amirah Greene and company will lead a very different group into the playoffs, which continue Tuesday with a second-round game against division rival Mott Haven.

Next: Mott Haven, PSAL Class A second round (Feb. 28, 6:30 p.m.)

2. Staten Island Academy (19-6) (1)

The Tigers went winless in their games against the best PSAL teams on Staten Island, ending with a loss to Tottenville last week. The hope for coach Rose Bruno’s team is that those tough non-league games paid dividends in their quest to repeat as NYSAISAA Class C champions.

Next: Columbia Prep, NYSAISAA play-in game (Feb. 29, 5 p.m.)

3. Fontbonne Hall (12-5) (3)

The Bonnies have been the bridesmaids of the CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Division II tournament the last two seasons. They enter as the No. 2 seed after Bishop Kearney was awarded the regular-season title. A diocesan title would be a perfect ending for Fontbonne.

Next: St. Agnes, CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Division II quarterfinals (Feb. 28, TBA @ St. Agnes)

4. Bishop Kearney (13-10) (4)

Kearney, in its first season in CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Division II, is the favorite to win the diocesan crown. The Tigers will be the top seed and feature one of the tournament’s best players in Allison Gasparino, who is in the middle of a breakout season.

Next: St. Edmund/St. Saviour, CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Division II semifinals (March 1, TBA @ Bishop Kearney)

5. Poly Prep (16-6) (5)

The Blue Devils ended their late season slide with an Ivy League win over Trinity. Stars Jacquie Kennedy and Katie Friel have never been to a NYSAISAA Class C final. Maybe this is the year, starting with a play-in game against York Prep.

Next: York Prep, NYSAISAA play-in game, (Feb. 29, 5 p.m.)

6. Horace Mann (18-6) (6)

Madison Gordon had quite an end to the regular season. The senior guard had 25 points, seven steals and was 14-of-18 from the foul line in a win over rival Riverdale in the school annual Buzzell Game. The NYSAISAA tournament is up next.

Next: @ Rye Country Day, NYSAISAA quarterfinals (March. 1, 5 p.m.)

7. Lab Museum United (21-4) (7)

Practice time is over, now it’s game time. Lab Museum United is in the midst of the best season in program history, but Jenny Ramirez, Ashanti Plummer and the rest of the Gators won’t be completely satisfied unless they win a PSAL Class A championship and head up to Albany.

Next: James Madison, PSAL Class A second round (Feb. 28, 5 p.m.)

8. Goldstein (20-2) (8)

The Dolphins know all about winning championships. This isn’t the first rodeo for Brittany McDonough, Nora Elbassiony and company – two years ago they led Goldstein to the PSAL Class B championship and they’re hoping to repeat the feat in the ‘A’ league this year.

Next: Hillcrest, PSAL Class A second round (Feb. 29, 5 p.m.)

9. St. John’s Prep (10-4) (9)

The Red Storm, winners of two of the last three postseason crowns, are always a threat to take the CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Division II title. Lexus Avila has turned into a star and has carried SJP the last few weeks. Add in Jennifer Walsh and Caroline Souza and you have a contender.

Next: Catherine McAuley, CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Division II quarterfinals (Feb. 28, TBA @ St. Agnes)

10. Fieldston (14-6) (10)

Fieldston’s late-season surge earned the Eagles a play-in game in the NYSAISAA tournament. Larissa McPhee, Caroline Susman and Kalijah Terilli have all had fine seasons. Coach Rock Rosa’s team will be a tough out in the postseason.

Next: Chapin, NYSAISAA play-in game, (Feb. 29, 5 p.m.)

New: None

Dropped out: None

On the bubble: St. Edmund Prep (9-8), Loyola (19-4), Baruch College Campus (14-8), Dalton (9-10) and Martin Luther King (17-1)
