Your NPR dollars at work

They were raising money yesterday at WNYC, the city’s public-radio outlet, when suddenly someone told the truth.

What do listeners get for their donation dollars, asked the on-air pitchman, WNYC reporter and senior producer Collin Campbell.

“We pay for WNYC reporters, like Arun Venugopal, who go after the NYPD . . .”

Say what? Hasn’t the department been catching enough grief lately for doing its best to keep New York safe without the city’s flagship public-radio station adding cop-bashing to its tin-cup repertoire?

Station publicity director Jennifer Houlihan said yesterday that Campbell “used language that we don’t feel is accurate” — though the words slipped so easily off the pitchman’s lips it’s clear that he thought they were spot-on.

Certainly they betray the lefty sensibilities that have long animated public broadcasting — especially its news programming.

Anyone who doubts it can just give a listen — or ask Juan Williams, who was summarily fired by NPR after falling afoul of its über-liberal canon.

Campbell’s moment of truth, if nothing else, adds context to the discussion.

Potential donors who were offended by it should put away their checkbooks.
