Iran ‘attack’ on hold till after US elex

Israel will wait until after the US presidential election in November to bomb Iran’s nuclear plants, under a deal being hashed out by the two allies this past week.

President Obama plans to reassure Benjamin Netanyahu tomorrow at the White House that the United States will make sure Iran doesn’t build a nuclear weapon, as long as the Israeli prime minister delays his attack plans, according to a report in The Sunday Times of London.

“Netanyahu isn’t stupid. He isn’t going to stand in the way of Obama,” said a source close to the prime minister. “But if Obama reneges on his promise to prevent Iran getting nuclear weapons, Israel will strike.”

Tensions between the United States and Israel over Iran’s nuclear program have simmered for months.

Many top Israeli officials want to strike now, before Iran weaponizes its nuclear program. The United States has opted for sanctions to pressure Iran instead.

As early as Friday, Obama warned against a premature attack on Iran, while Netanyahu insisted his country had the right to defend itself and needed room to maneuver.
