These images from the Smithsonian magazine’s 9th annual photo contest, has attracted over 14 thousand photographers from all 50 States and over 100 countries in five categories, The Natural World, Americana, People, Travel and Altered Images (for photographs that have been manipulated). The magazine’s photo editors have selected 50 finalists, 10 in each category, which are displayed their website. Ultimately, the editors will select one winner in each category, as well as one grand prize winner. Readers are invited to select an additional “Readers’ Choice” winner by voting for their favorite image online at Smithsonian.com. This image “Flight path of the white collared kingfisher” by C.S. Ling of Singapore is among the 10 from the category “Altered Images.”
