Nets overcome Brooks’ late foul

When MarShon Brooks fouled Randy Foye in the act of making a jumper with 38.2 seconds remaining in Wednesday night’s game against the Clippers, the Nets rookie was afraid he might have cost his team the game.

So he couldn’t help but admit his relief to see Jordan Farmar’s game-winning 3-pointer go in with 0.2 seconds remaining to seal the Nets’ 101-100 win Wednesday night.

“Of course,” Brooks said. “That was a big play in the game. I fouled a jump shooter, and for him to make it. … I felt like I kind of let my team down, but Farmar picked us back up.”

Brooks saw his scoring output dip over the Nets’ four-game road trip, failing to score more than 12 points in any of the four games. But he looked good in the first half last night, going 7-for-10 from the field and scoring 16 points, and he finished the game with 19 points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal.

“I was just being aggressive, looking for my shot,” Brooks said, “not passing up shots, taking shots when they’re there. Against the better teams, you’ve got to take them when they’re there, and I made some shots.”

Coach Avery Johnson didn’t sound confident the Nets would get Mehmet Okur, who has been out with back spasms since the Nets’ 97-90 win in Philadelphia over the 76ers on Jan. 25, anytime soon.

“We’ll give an update on him at some point, but he’s out right now,” he said before the game.

Okur has played in 17 games (including 14 starts), averaging 7.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game in a little less than 27 minutes per contest.

Small forward Gerald Green’s 10-day contract was set to expire at midnight, but the Nets already had indicated earlier in the week that Green’s deal would be renewed. Green scored two points in eight minutes last night — his lowest minute total in the five games he has played with the Nets — but earned plaudits from Johnson for his play on the defensive end.

“Even a guy like Gerald Green, who played eight minutes, or [Johan] Petro played 18 minutes or whatever we’re in to help us get some big defensive stops, and they helped build the lead,” Johnson said. “Total team effort tonight.”
