Man dead following Qns. standoff

An emotionally disturbed man killed himself Sunday after a nearly four hour standoff with police in Queens, authorities said.

Police and the SWAT team tried to coax the barricaded man out of his Glendale apartment but after gaining access to the apartment with a camera around 10:10 p.m., they discovered that the man had shot himself in the chest.

“They shined a light at the window and they told him to come out. He wasn’t moving,” said Brian Benning, 24, who lives across the street.

The standoff started around 6:40 p.m. after the man’s wife called cops to say she received text messages from him where he threatened to commit suicide, cops said.

When officers arrived, the man, whose name wasn’t immediately released, fired one shot towards them from inside the apartment on 68th Street near 70th Avenue, cops said.

“He lived there for 3 years, him and his wife,” said the landlord.

“They had a dispute, she left, and when she got to where she was going she called me to say he is a little distraught.”

A woman at the scene who identified herself as the victim’s mother said that the he works as a peace officer at CUNY.
