Mets looking at Nitkowski for bullpen

PORT ST. LUCIE — C.J. Nitkowski would love to become this year’s version of Jason Isringhausen for the Mets.

Nitkowski, a 39-year-old left-hander who last pitched in the major leagues for the Nationals in 2005, threw a bullpen session at the Mets spring training complex Thursday in hopes of landing a contract.

If signed, Nitkowski potentially would give the Mets a second veteran lefty in the bullpen, behind Tim Byrdak.

Mets special advisor J.P. Ricciardi, who was responsible for bringing Isringhausen to camp last year for a tryout — the veteran right-hander ultimately made the team and was among the Mets’ most dependable relievers — said Nitkowski threw “well” and could be considered for a contract.

Nitkowski spent 2009 and ’10 pitching in Japan and Korea, but was away from baseball last year. The former St. John’s standout has developed a new sidearm delivery that he believes can be effective.

Nitkowski said he has worked out for several other teams.

“For me, the goal all along was to get 30 nos,” Nitkowski said, referring to the 30 major-league teams. “To try to get in front of as many people as I can and be told no, if that makes sense.”

Mike Pelfrey was rocked for four earned runs on six hits over 2²/₃ innings in the Mets’ 5-4 exhibition loss to the Marlins. Jose Reyes was not present for the Marlins after participating in a night game the previous day in Miami.

“I don’t think I did a whole lot right,” Pelfrey said. “The biggest thing, early, I didn’t get ahead. The sinker today was moving, but almost sideways instead of down.”

Michael Weiner, the head of the MLB players’ association, endorses Fred Wilpon’s ownership of the Mets, despite the team’s financial troubles.

“The Wilpons want to win,” said Weiner, who conducted a morning meeting with the players to discuss union issues. “I don’t know much about the legal circumstances, but the Wilpons have been strong owners and whatever is happening outside with respect to them is happening outside. But the way they’ve conducted themselves throughout their tenure is what I’m relying on.

“Fred Wilpon and others have done a lot of things to try to enhance the game of baseball. They have some goodwill in the bank.”
