Yankees’ Swisher leaves game with discomfort

DUNEDIN, Fla. — When Nick Swisher exited Thursday’s 7-5 loss to the Blue Jays at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium, he was asked if there was anything physically wrong.

Swisher answered no, but about 20 minutes later Yankees manager Joe Girardi said there was.

“Swisher has a tight left groin,’’ Girardi said of his right fielder. “There are no tests and he wasn’t going to play [today].’’

Following an offseason of intense workouts, Swisher arrived in camp lighter and was noticeably faster running the bases and getting jumps in the outfield.

Swisher exited after two at-bats.

The news on David Robertson was good. The eighth-inning right-hander, who has been out since suffering a bone bruise in the foot during a fall down a staircase on March 7, exercised for 30 minutes on a treadmill.

“No pain,’’ Girardi said of the right foot. “If everything goes OK, he will probably go out there.’’

Girardi gave no hint as to when Robertson would appear in a game.

“He has to do some bullpens,’’ Girardi said.

Eduardo Nunez rested his bruised right hand. He won’t pick up bat until Saturday. Nunez hasn’t played since March 5.

Joba Chamberlain threw 25 fastballs in a bullpen session and will resume throwing breaking balls tomorrow.

Chamberlain will throw 50 pitches off a bullpen mound with the last 10 being sliders.

Chamberlain is working back from Tommy John surgery in June.

Lefty reliever Cesar Cabral has a chance to make the Opening Day roster, but simply because he is left-handed doesn’t mean the Rule 5 pick from Boston is a lock to be the 12th pitcher and second lefty in the bullpen.

“I don’t think it’s a necessity because our righties get lefties out,’’ Girardi said of the need for another lefty to pair with the inconsistent Boone Logan. “If our righties at the back end of the game had a hard time getting lefties out, I would say you need a second lefty. It’s a nice thing to have but you don’t necessarily need it.’’

If Cabral doesn’t stick with the Yankees, he has to be offered back to the Red Sox.

Pitching prospect Manuel Banuelos got spanked by the Blue Jays. The lefty gave up four runs, three hits and walked one in an inning.

“He is a young guy and with experience he will learn to make adjustments and be more patient,’’ catcher Francisco Cervelli said. “It was just a bad day.’’

Banuelos, who with Dellin Betances is being counted on by Hal Steinbrenner to help the Yankees keep their payroll under $189 million in 2014, had trouble with everything but the fastball.

“He couldn’t throw his secondary pitches for strikes,’’ Girardi said.
