Life throws pitcher-doctor a curve

He’s training hard again to make it to the big leagues — as a doctor.

Jared Thomas, a former hurler in the Seattle Mariners’ minor-league system, is now making a pitch to become an orthopedic surgeon.

The 31-year-old was among the 140 students of Mount Sinai School of Medicine’s class of 2012 who gathered there on “Match Day” yesterday to learn where they’ll be doing their residencies.

Thomas will be heading to the University of Michigan to begin a five-year residency, near where he grew up in Clarkston, Mich.

“Baseball was my childhood dream, and I pursued it with vigor, . . . but it wasn’t as fulfilling as I expected,” he said. “I wanted to do something with my intellect to really help society and impact the world.”
