Thomas, Giants title game hero, signs with Bears

Devin Thomas didn’t make much of a statistical contribution in his two seasons with the Giants but he made two huge plays on special teams down the stretch of the NFC Championship. Those plays will be remembered as his greatest moments with the Giants, because Wednesday he signed a one-year contract with the Bears.

Thomas on his Twitter account wrote “Much love for the NY Giants and my teammates for a magical year!’’

It’s likely the Bears are hoping Thomas, 25, can make their final roster as a kickoff returner and special teams ace, since he hasn’t shown much of anything as a receiver. Thomas caught only three passes for 37 yards last season. He returned 25 kickoffs and averaged 24.3 yards per return.

“I know I’m joining an organization that’s legendary. That’s the first thing that comes to mind, the tradition and the history,” Thomas said.

Thomas made an impact in the NFC title game in San Francisco, recovering two fumbles by punt returner Kyle Williams. The first helped set up a late fourth-quarter touchdown and the second, in overtime, put Lawrence Tynes in position for the game-winning field goal in a 20-17 victory that sent the Giants to Super Bowl XLVI.

“There’s nothing like it,” Thomas said. “It’s something you dream of as a kid. It’s the reason guys play this game. For me, I have the hunger to get back. I have the drive to stay a champion. I’m blessed to have been part of winning the Super Bowl and look forward to helping Chicago get there too.”
