Stop signs, speed bumps and midblock cross walks are coming to the unlikeliest spot in the Big Apple this summer — the congested heart of Midtown Manhattan.
The city’s Department of Transportation is adding the pedestrian-friendly amenities to a six-block stretch from 51st to 57th streets between Sixth and Seventh Avenues.
That stretch already includes half a dozen privately owned pedestrian plazas, which would become more easily linked.
The plan was approved by Community Board 5’s transportation committee on Monday.
DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan called the future walker-friendly area “6th-and-a-half-Avenue.”
“This would really energize these places with foot traffic.” she said.
