CHSAA softball roundup: Hill tops NDA for league-opening win

A big second inning and the arm of its freshman pitcher propelled St. Joseph Hill to a league opening win.

The Hilltoppers scored five runs on six hits in the second for a 6-5 win over Notre Dame Academy in CHSAA Staten Island softball Thursday at South Beach. Megan Sullivan, who was 2-for-3, and Danielle Barchitta each picked up two-run singles in the second and pitcher Julia Piscopo added an RBI single to make it 6-1.

Piscopo fanned 11 and allowed nine hits in the circle for Hill (1-0). Jackie Castore drove in three runs and Alexa Guarino drove in a run for Notre Dame (0-1).

Moore Catholic 11, St. John Villa 2: Gianna DeCesare scattered five hits, walked none and allowed two unearned runs in five innings of work and had two hits for Moore Catholic (1-0) Nicole DeMartino went 4-for-4 with four RBIs. Kirsten Reina was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs and Kristen Broecker was also 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. Maxine Jasko added two hits. Mary Curatolo went 2-for-3 and Laura Innocente drove in two runs for St. John Villa (0-1).

CHSAA BROOKLYN/QUEENS AA

Fontbonne Hall 15, Christ the King 3: Nicolette Trapani gave up two earned runs on two hits and struck out 10 for Fontbonne Hall (2-0). Kara Anne Galante had a hit and three runs scored, Christina Calascione had two RBIs and Melissa Clark drove in a run. Christ the King is 0-1.
