Snee says flying under radar fine with Giants

While the Jets have grabbed all the attention around here lately, the Giants have sat back and watched the circus.

And if you ask right guard Chris Snee, that’s just how the Giants like it in the offseason.

“The only time we want headlines are during playoff time and in particular February,” Snee said yesterday at the temporary NFL Shop at Draft in Manhattan. “We like to kind of do our work and fly under the radar and just be in the mix at the end. That’s always been our formula. We’re not a big attention-grabbing team for the most part. That’s just the way we like it.”

Snee appeared with Jets tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson to promote the store, which opens Monday.

The Giants are worrying about getting their Super Bowl rings next month, not about an impending quarterback controversy.

Snee revealed he had elbow surgery last week, but said it is not serious and he expects to be ready when the team’s offseason program starts.

The glow of the Giants’ magical run to a Super Bowl title still is fresh, but Snee said the team will be ready to turn the page when practice starts again.

The biggest news the Giants made this week concerns head coach Tom Coughlin having a contract extension coming his way. Snee said he’s happy for his coach (and father-in-law) and said not enough people appreciate what he has accomplished.

“It’s a yearly battle with him,” Snee said. “I’ve said this over and over again: I really feel bad for him because all he’s done is win football games and make this team a bunch of class guys, who just have a passion for the game of football. But I don’t think he gets appreciated. I still think, even after winning this, if we go through a rough patch this year or the year after someone will be calling for him again. I’m certainly happy for him.

“He’ll be coaching until they kick him out of here. He’ll be coaching here longer than I’ll be playing here. I’ll tell you that.”

The Giants will have a new look on offense this year, having lost wide receiver Mario Mannigham and running back Brandon Jacobs as free agents. Both players signed with the 49ers.

“We need guys to step up,” Snee said. “Mario made some huge plays for us, and I expect him to do the same in San Fran. Brandon just loves football. He’s one of the toughest guys I’ve played with. He really gets our guys going in the pregame huddle and [with] his physical play on the field. They will both be missed for different reasons.”
