IBM supercomputer’s new home is Rutgers University

PISCATAWAY, NJ — The new home for a $3.3 million supercomputer from IBM is the Rutgers University campus in Piscataway, NJ.

Rutgers officials said Tuesday that the IBM Blue Gene/P computer will be one of the most powerful computers in the Northeast and that it will be able take in massive amounts of data in a fraction of the time that a desktop unit would use.

The goal is to allow faculty members to do work faster, better and more creatively. Rutgers researchers will be able to examine historical data and monitor real-time data in biology, genetics, pharmaceuticals and even meteorology

Rutgers officials said a number of New Jersey and New York businesses — including Johnson & Johnson and JPMorgan Chase — are interested in using this computer as they examine genetic sequences and consumer buying trends.
