Inside Boss’ FBI ‘spy’ jobs

George Steinbrenner was a Cold Warrior.

The late owner of the Yankees assisted the FBI three times in Cold War-related national-security cases involving the former Soviet Union and in connection with Middle Eastern terrorism, The Post has learned.

But his efforts were not tied to his owning the Bronx Bombers.

“It was all because of American Ship Building,” a senior FBI source said of the company that was headed by Steinbrenner. “It had nothing to do with the Yankees.”

One official familiar with Steinbrenner’s role said he provided agents with contacts and information at his disposal because of American Ship Building’s international clientele and operations.

Steinbrenner also never hesitated to give cops or the FBI access to Yankee Stadium or other team facilities — in New York or Florida — whenever they asked, said Jack Lawn, a former administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration who was the Yankees’ operations chief in the early ’90s.

“George was very supportive of law enforcement, very supportive of the FBI,” Lawn told The Post.
