NYC nursing home aide gets prison in sex case

She literally spelled his doom.

A helpless, mute female stroke victim turned the tables on the monstrous aide who sexually attacked her in her Morningside Heights nursing home bed — spelling her courtroom testimony by pointing to letters on a page and having it read aloud by an interpreter.

The brave 61-year-old woman’s painstakingly rendered testimony won a conviction against her attacker, Jose Ramos, 62, of the Bronx. Ramos was sentenced today to seven years prison on his convictions on sex abuse, endangering the welfare of a vulnerable elderly person, and endangering the welfare of a physically disabled person.

Upon his release, he must register as a sex offender and serve ten years probation.

“The defendant preyed upon a helpless victim,” DA Cyrus Vance said in announcing the sentencing. “Our Sex Crimes and Elder Abuse units are committed to seeking justice for victims of sexual violence and elder abuse, no matter how challenging the circumstances of the case.”

The victim was partially paralyzed and unable to speak, and was considered completely dependent, according to the trial’s testimony.

Ramos had been assigned to care for her on the midnight shift at Amsterdam Nursing Home, and was caught in the act after the nurse on duty barged into the room after seeing the victim’s call light come on three separate times, according to testimony.
