Jackie Kennedy unheard tapes to air

Never-before-heard tapes of Jacqueline Kennedy talking about the JFK assassination and her years in the White House will air in September in a primetime special, ABC announced yesterday.

The existence of the audio tapes, recorded in 1964, first became known last January when the History channel — which is partly owned by ABC — announced it was dropping a $25-million miniseries about the Kennedy family.

According to reports, Caroline Kennedy threatened not to cooperate with the tapes special if the warts-and-all miniseries aired.

ABC said yesterday that Caroline will participate in the special.

The recordings are a long conversation Jackie had with historian Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. shortly after JFK’s death. The late First Lady stipulated that they not be made public until after her death.

This year is the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy inauguration.

No specific date in September has been set yet.
