Knicks’ assistants in limbo

With sources contending Mike D’Antoni should return as head coach for the final year of his contract, there’s the matter of his assistant staff to be worked out.

Each of his assistants — his brother Dan D’Antoni, Phil Weber, Herb Williams and Kenny Atkinson — have deals that expire June 30.

D’Antoni told The Post on Saturday he “probably” will add another assistant to the staff — likely a defensive-minded coach that the organization feels could help stabilize the Knicks on both ends of the court. D’Antoni, for years dating to Phoenix, has rebuffed the notion of adding a defensive-oriented assistant, feeling it was an affront.

The addition could put one of the remaining assistant’s jobs in jeopardy, though D’Antoni does not think so. A source said Walsh will address the assistant-coaching staff’s contract situation before he leaves his position on June 30. Dan D’Antoni was in charge of the defense, Williams the big men and Weber is extremely close to Amar’e Stoudemire. Atkinson is rated as the best workout guy.

Knicks will continue pre-draft workouts today with the notable backcourt men, Duke point guard Nolan Smith and Butler’s Shelvin Mack as a headliners. Maryland’s small forward Jordan Williams also will attend. . . . Knicks are holding a free-agent camp later this week — an important showcase as they may add to the roster before the potential July 1 lockout delays regular free agency.
