Giants sign St. John’s shortstop Panik

Shortstop Joe Panik, who led St. John’s to the Big East championship game and into the NCAA Tournament this season, has signed with the Giants, who chose him with the 29th pick in the first round of Major League Baseball’s first-year player draft last week.

Terms of the deal were not announced, but it’s expected Panik, of Hopewell Junction, N.Y., will receive around $1.1 million, MLB’s suggested salary for the 29th pick.
