Calls for randy Rep. Anthony Weiner to resign rang out yesterday from the Beltway to Queens Boulevard.
The No. 2 Democrat in the House of Representatives called on Weiner to step aside, while dozens of the congressman’s constituents rallied at his Queens office demanding he call it quits.
“This is bizarre, unacceptable behavior,” House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer said of Weiner’s Internet dalliances on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”
“It seems to me extraordinarily difficult that he can proceed to represent his constituents in an effective way,” the Maryland legislator said, reacting to new photographs of Weiner grabbing himself while in the House gym that were sent to at least one woman.
And while House members return to Washington today after a break, Weiner won’t be among them.
He has instead flown off to a rehab facility, his spokeswoman said.
He might not be welcome in the Beltway anyway, with both Hoyer and top House Democrat Nancy Pelosi calling for Weiner to step down.
They’re in good company.
About 50 of Weiner’s constituents yesterday protested in front of his Kew Gardens office, enraged at his admissions to sending photos of his crotch to a 21-year-old college student in Washington state and privately messaging a Delaware teen.
Others, including a few supporters, assembled outside the politician’s Forest Hills home.
“I’m disappointed in him,” said protester Lorraine Sciulli, of Middle Village. “While the country is at war, we have a huge deficit and medical-care problems, this guy is playing with his anatomy.”
