Small step in Wright direction for Mets

David Wright’s workout at Citi Field yesterday wasn’t much, but the way things are for the Mets these days, was a promising development.

Wright played catch and took some grounders from his knees, and afterward did not report any problems.

“I felt good,” Wright said after yesterday’s 7-3 loss to the Angels. “I made it through [it], which I was expecting. . . . I played catch for 20 throws and took some ground balls on my knees. It was very little.”

But it was the most the third baseman has done since being diagnosed last month with a stress fracture in his lower back.

Wright has been on the disabled list since May 18. On June 3, general manager Sandy Alderson announced Wright would be shut down for an additional three weeks. Wright will have more tests done on the back later this week, and if everything goes well, he hopes to head down to Port St. Lucie to continue his rehab.

For now, a brief game of catch and fielding a few grounders will have to do.

When asked if yesterday’s exercise was a step forward, Wright said: “That’s fair to say.”

He will go back to riding the stationary bike today, and tomorrow he is schedule to do similar drills to the ones he did yesterday.

“There’s nothing I can do to do anything differently,” Wright said. “I’ve done everything they’ve asked me to do.”

And he said he is optimistic he will get positive news this week.

“I haven’t had any hint that it’s going to go anything less than favorable,” Wright said. “It’s been around the six-week period where bones generally heal themselves. Hopefully, I’ll be ready to go once I get that clearance.”
