Bloomberg’s mother passes at 102

Mayor Bloomberg’s mother, who watched proudly as her son became a billionaire media mogul and then mayor of New York City, died yesterday at her home in the Boston suburb of Medford. She was 102.

“Today, my sister, Marjorie, and I lost our mother, Charlotte, after an extraordinary 102 years of life,” the mayor said.

“As the center of our family, our mother’s unimpeachable integrity, fierce independence, and constant love were gifts that profoundly shaped our lives and the lives of so many who knew her. “Our family recognizes how truly blessed we have been to have her live such a long and full life, and to be able to carry her spirit with us forever.”

In 2009, just before his mom’s 100th birthday, Bloomberg told The Post, “She remembers electricity coming into the house or apartment she lived in, and gas lamps going out. She remembers the first car in the neighborhood.”

He marveled, “She carries a cellphone and e-mails.”

She was at the mayor’s side for his first two inaugurations, but was unable to attend the last.

Charlotte Reubens was born in Jersey City in 1909. At a time when few women aspired to higher education, she got a BA in accounting from NYU. She married William Bloomberg in 1934. He died in 1963.

Burial will be private; a memorial service will be held at a later date. The family asks that donations in her memory go to the Medford Public Library.
