Stagehand’s death prompts cancellation of Wednesday night’s performance of ‘How to Succeed in Business’

Last night’s sold-out performance of the hit Broadway revival of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” was abruptly canceled when a stagehand was found dead just before curtain.

The 29-year-old worker, who authorities believe died of an accidental drug overdose, was found in an out-of-the-way room. His name was withheld pending family notification.

It would have been the show’s 100th performance and a party was planned afterward.

Audience member Jeffrey Gingold, of Milwaukee, said the crew initially announced a delay of 15 minutes. It turned into more than an hour. “You could tell something was going on,” he said. “They were telling the crowd to stay quiet.

We waited for an hour and a half. We were wondering why they had to stop the show. I mean, the show must go on, right?” He said stars Daniel Radcliffe, of “Harry Potter” fame, and John Larroquette finally took the stage to announce the cancellation.

“They had the look on their faces of a relative having to break the news that someone had died,” Gingold said.
