Three injured in mechanical lift accident at Lincoln Center

Two stagehands were hospitalized today after an accident involving a mechanical lift at a Jazz at Lincoln Center theater in Columbus Circle, authorities said.

None of the injuries were serious, according to authorities.

The accident occurred when a so-called Genie Lift was being used backstage at the fifth-floor Rose Theater in the venue inside the Time Warner Center at around 2:15 p.m., according to the FDNY and people at the scene.

The stagehands were setting up for tonight’s US premier of the opera Selma Jezková, performed by the Royal Danish Opera and Orchestra. The opera is based on the Lars von Trier’s 2000 film “Dancer in the Dark,” which starred Bjork.

The injured stagehands — one man and one woman — were taken to Cornell Medical Center, where they were listed in stable condition, an NYPD spokesman said.

Jazz at Lincoln Center Vice President Gail Beltron said, “During the set up for an evening performance at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater, two stagehands were involved in a minor accident. They are receiving medical attention and the performance is scheduled to commence at 8 p.m. as planned.”

“The incident is not related to any activity or equipment that occurs or is used during the performance,” Beltrone said.

Beltrone said the stagehands were doing “incidental work,” but would not elaborate on how they were injured.

“We will provide updates on the status of the two stagehands as they become known,” Beltrone said.
