Jets name Sanchez captain

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez will have a different look when the team takes the field this year.

Coach Rex Ryan revealed yesterday that Sanchez will be the team’s captain and will wear the “C” on his jersey.

“I see the way guys are around him,” Ryan said. “This is really going to be his team. I’m not big on giving out those captain things . . . but we will put the ‘C’ on his jersey this year because he truly is our captain.”

Ryan said there will be three captains each week to represent offense, defense and special teams. Sanchez will always be the offensive captain.

Sanchez elevated his status as the team leader during the lockout when he organized practices in California and New Jersey while the players could not work out at the team complex.

Free-agent wide receiver Braylon Edwards avoided jail time at a probation violation hearing in Cleveland Municipal Court yesterday. He was given 100 hours of community service and put on one year of active probation.

Edwards pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated last week in Manhattan. That triggered yesterday’s hearing because he was on inactive probation at the time of his DWI arrest in Sept. 2010. Active probation means Edwards will now have to check in with a probation officer once a month by phone.

Sanchez spoke about being willing to restructure his contract to clear salary-cap space, but no one from the team has approached him about doing that yet, according to a source.

Darrelle Revis said he has not been asked to reconfigure his deal. He would not say whether he would be willing to do it a year after his acrimonious negotiations with the team.

“I’m going to keep that private with my agents and let them handle that stuff,” Revis said.

The Jets have not begun working on a long-term deal with linebacker David Harris either, a source said. Harris is currently the team’s franchise player, but the team hopes to lower his cap number with a long-term contract. A source said those talks likely will happen next week.

Free-agent cornerback Drew Coleman does not appear to be in the Jets’ plans. A source said the team has not contacted Coleman’s representatives and Coleman is looking at moving on.
