Construction deaths plunge

Construction-site accidents continue to fall as the industry pushes for increased safety awareness and the economy keeps limiting new projects.

Accidents were down from 94 over the first six months of 2010 to 56 this year, according to Department of Buildings data. Likewise, injuries fell from 96 to 59.

The Buildings Department says awareness has increased since 2008, when, at the height of the building boom, 19 workers died in accidents, including nine in two crane collapses.

There have been three construction-site deaths so far this year.
