3-alarm Soho fire exposes huge stash of marijuana

A roaring three-alarm blaze that ripped through a six-story SoHo building early today exposed a giant stash of “high quality” marijuana in the apartment of one female tenant, sources said.

The startling discovery was made as fire marshals tromped through the smoke-and-water-damaged six-story walkup at 68 Thompson St., in the heart of trendy SoHo, where a three-alarm blaze erupted around 2 a.m. The fire was under control at 4:25 a.m.

When marshals stepped inside the apartment of one 44-year-old woman, they found more than 10 pounds of weed inside big plastic bags in plain view, sources said.

“It was high-quality,” one source said.

Suddenly, a small squadron of plainclothes cops descended on the block, grilling shell-shocked tenants who were huddled on stoops or stood on the sidewalks. The suspect was charged with possession of marijuana; a male friend with her was not arrested.

The arrested wasn’t the end of the bizarre events triggered by the blaze, however.

About the same time as the pot bust, tenant Kathie Cammann, 64 — still dressed in her pajamas — was approached by a neighborhood resident who gently pressed a pocketbook into her arms.

Inside, Cammann said, was a toothbrush and $100.

“Who does that? It’s the nicest NY story. That really made me cry.”

“I have an angel neighbor!”

By yesterday afternoon, the Department of Buildings had ruled the 106-year-old building unsafe for residents to immediately return, declaring a “full vacate” order for the structure.
