Baxter double hits home for Mets

Mike Baxter had never been to Citi Field before being called up to the Mets yesterday, but he had a pretty good memory of the team’s former home.

The 26-year-old helped lead Archbishop Molloy to the CHSAA title at Shea Stadium in 2002 before playing college ball at Columbia and then Vanderbilt.

“That’s the last time I was on this site,” Baxter said of the win over Moore Catholic in the final, when he went 1-for-3.

He’ll likely remember last night, as well. Baxter made his Mets debut, pinch-hitting in the eighth inning and delivering an RBI double to left in a 9-8 comeback win over the Padres, with members of his family — most of whom still live in Whitestone — in the stands.

“It’s not the same park, but it’s still special because it’s the Mets,” said Baxter, who can play first base, third base and the outfield.

He got the call from Triple-A Buffalo when Jose Reyes went on the disabled list before last night’s game against the Padres, who placed Baxter on waivers last month.

Jack Curran, the longtime baseball and basketball coach at Molloy, had just come off the field at his baseball camp when he heard the news of Baxter’s call-up.

“He was always out on the field, taking extra swings,” said Curran, who has won 17 city titles in baseball, the last one with Baxter’s team. “He was always more of a gap hitter than a home run hitter.”

That should make him a good fit for Citi Field.
