Time for Moss to grow on Giants

Is Randy Moss a fit for the Giants? (AP)

The voracious Eagles last night fired a vicious Shot Heard Round East Rutherford and Round the NFC East by signing Eli Manning security blanket Steve Smith — only one day after the Giants examined his surgically repaired knee and Tom Coughlin pronounced him a long way away from getting back on the field.

It must be viewed by Big Blue as a declaration of war!

It is a dagger to the heart of Giant fans already beside themselves over the loss of Plaxico Burress to the Jets and Kevin Boss to the Raiders and the absence of any free-agent splash from GM Jerry Reese at a time when the Eagles are swooping down and grabbing a slew of marquee names.

This brazen heist, from right under Big Blue’s nose, will only ratchet up the white-hot rivalry between the teams and cause consternation, if not shock, within the walls of the Timex Performance Center.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Jerry Reese needs to pick up the telephone and see if Randy Moss might be interested in coming out of retirement.

You heard me right.

Randy Moss.

Sometimes you need to fight fire with fire, and this is one of those times.

Sometimes, if only for the psyche of your team, you need to take a bold gamble, and this is one of those times.

A tall order for Tom Coughlin for sure.

But a tall target for Eli Manning.

The kind of tall target he hasn’t had since Plaxico Burress left.

In their desperate quest for their first Super Bowl crown, the Eagles have been simultaneously trampling on the New York football season.

First the Eagles stole Nnamdi Asomugha from the Jets at the 11th hour. Now this.

Who do these guys think they are, the Phillies (see Cliff Lee)?

It means that Manning will be looking for the likes of Domenik Hixon or Victor Cruz or Darius Reynaud out of the slot against a Philadelphia secondary that boasts Asomugha, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Asante Samuel.

It means that the Giants’ secondary will now have to deal with Mike Vick running and throwing to DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and Smith, who when healthy will catch 100 balls for you, whenever he returns.

The bad blood between these adversaries has been flowing up and down the Turnpike from Bednarik vs. Gifford; to Joe Pisarcik vs. Herman Edwards in the infamous Miracle of the Meadowlands; to Buddy Ryan vs. Bill Parcells; to Phil Simms vs. Jerome Brown and Reggie White; to Randall Cunningham vs. Lawrence Taylor, Carl Banks and Pepper Johnson; to Donovan McNabb vs. Michael Strahan; to Matt Dodge vs. DeSean Jackson at the infamous Miracle of the Meadowlands II; to Osi Umenyiora vs. LeSean McCoy; to all of Big Blue vs. Mike Vick.

Go get Randy Moss. Before the Eagles, who have also added Jason Babin, Cullen Jenkins and Ronnie Brown through free agency, go get him too.
