10-year-old girl dead, six others injured after horrific two-vehicle crash in Queens

A 10-year-old girl was killed and six other people injured in a horrific two-vehicle crash in Queens last night.

Sabrina Mangos, of Tennyson, Australia, was ejected from the van she was riding in with her family, and was pinned under it when it rolled over. She died at the scene.

“I heard this really bad explosion, and I knew it must have been a bad accident,” said one local resident.

The van was rolled on its side, and, “me and about 12 other guys went and tried to pick [it] up, and we pushed it back on its side, and that’s where … we found the girl covered in blood.”

The child’s mom wailed in grief as she realized her daughter had been fatally injured, witnesses said.

The owner of a restaurant near the crash scene at 34th Avenue and 31st Street in Astoria said, “Everyone was screaming in the van,” which held seven people. He and his workers also helped right the vehicle.

Another witness said, “I was calling 911 when I saw a man trapped inside. Another man broke the window with his fist and helped pull the man out.”

The accident occurred around 6:30 p.m. when a gray Nissan Sentra on 34th Avenue struck the van at 31st Street in Astoria, the witnesses said.

The distraught Sentra driver held his head in his hands as he later talked to cops at the scene. No charges were filed.

The people injured were not seriously hurt, authorities said.
