When Catie Lazarus was laid off from her job working on educational cartoons for children, she found the job market wasn’t exactly brimming with opportunity for someone who wanted to write for kids.

“I couldn’t even get an interview,” she says.

But if people looking to fill jobs weren’t willing to talk to her, others were. Frustrated with the lack of opportunity and trying to figure out how to make her way in the career world, Lazarus began approaching successful people for advice and info, and found they were happy to talk about their work and how they’d landed their jobs.

“I could apply and apply for jobs and hear nothing back, but I found I could get informational interviews with just about anyone,” she says.

Thus was born “Employee of the Month,” a “talk show about dream jobs,” where Lazarus, who’s also a comedian and performer, interviews people with enviable careers.

“There are so many frustrated people who are facing what I was facing, I thought, why not share these incredible interviews?” says Lazarus, who on Thursday will take to the mike for the second installment of her series, following a debut where guests included College Humor CEO Ricky Van Veen and social activists the Yes Men.

This time out she’ll query documentary filmmaker Julia Bacha, performance artist Aurelia Thierree and Muppeteer Kevin Clash, the voice of Elmo. (“I would love to be a Muppet more than anything in the world,” Lazarus sighs.)

The concept, says the Brooklyn resident, is to offer some pointers to those who are stalled in their job searches or otherwise frustrated with their careers, and to inspire them with examples of how efforts to pursue career dreams can pay off.

“What I want people to walk away with is the realization that this could be you,” says Lazarus.

Who, by the way, is still looking.

“I really just want a writing job,” she says. “And I can also do voice-overs.”

Employee of the Month is at 92Y Tribeca, 200 Hudson St., Thursday at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10.
