This week’s couple: Q&A date

We sent Nate, a 24-year-old journalist, and Irene, a 26-year-old advertising account executive, for an upscale dinner date at the Upper East Side’s Philippe Chow NYC. Our only fear was that Nate wouldn’t be able to leave his work at the office and would treat the date like an interview session. So did these two loosen up and leave with a second date on their minds? Or did Irene feel more like a source than a sweetheart?

He said:

When Irene walked into the restaurant, I definitely thought she was really cute. It was a little awkward at first and it took a while to get into the flow. Once we got going, we did find some things to talk about — but a lot of the time it seemed like the things that she liked, I didn’t know anything about and vice versa. It felt like an interview at times, where I was just asking questions and she was answering them, but that’s probably my fault.

Irene did have some really great stories that I enjoyed hearing. She moved to America from Russia when she was little, which I thought was very interesting. By the end of the date I thought there was a tiny bit of chemistry, but not a huge amount. She gave me a handshake at the end of the night and I was thinking, “Okay, I get the picture.”

She said:

When I walked into Philippe Chow, Nate was waiting for me. He immediately got up when I walked in. It was a simple gesture, but I thought it was very gentlemanly. My first impression of Nate was that he was charming and all-American. He also seemed very normal, which was a huge relief. We talked about our respective jobs and college experiences. He enlightened me on some “Harry Potter” and “Star Wars” facts — things I know nothing about.

I think Nate is a great guy and we had a good time, but I think I see things as turning out more platonic. We didn’t exchange numbers, so I think we both had a good time but decided to leave it at that.
