J/Z top of the lines for straphangers

Jay-Z can finally be proud of the subway line he chose for his name.

The obscure J/Z — serving only six stations in Manhattan — was crowned the best subway line in all of the city, garnering high marks for seat availability, clear announcements and minimal delays, according to an annual report by a rider-advocacy group.

It’s the first time the line, which runs from Broad Street in lower Manhattan to Jamaica Center in Queens, has won the top grade on the Straphangers Campaign’s report card, the mass-transit equivalent of the Academy Awards.

Three lines — last year’s winner, the 7, and the E and Q — tied for second place, while the 2 and C both came in last.

The Straphangers Campaign uses MTA data to gauge the top line, analyzing performance indicators like regularity of service, cleanliness and breakdown frequency.

The 6 train, which tied for third with the L, had the most scheduled service, with trains programmed to arrive every 2 minutes, 30 seconds during rush hour.

It also had a near-perfect score on announcements, which were easily understood 99 percent of the time, but its score was dragged down because it gets too crowded and has frequent breakdowns.

While many New Yorkers know the J/Z only as the line that inspired a young Shawn Carter to take the stage name Jay-Z, regular riders aren’t surprised at its recognition.

“It’s gotten better over the years, and it’s much faster than back in the day,” said José Andino, 28.
