Weather delays strand dozens of travelers at area airports

Weather-related delays and cancellations were wreaking havoc at area airports this afternoon, leaving scores of would-be travelers stranded in New York City.

The terminals and waiting rooms at LaGuardia Airport were packed with people lugging suitcases and staring at the monitors displaying rows of cancelled flights.

“I’m pretty frustrated,” said Steve Varsamis, 27.

Officials at American Airlines told him his flight home was cancelled due to weather.

With no other flights available, the Chicago native was planning to book a hotel near the airport.

“This is the most ridiculous thing,” said Jeff Daniel, 26, whose 12:40 flight to Boston was cancelled.

He was also told it was because of the weather.

Daniel was put on standby on a later flight, but couldn’t board because it was too full.

It might have been his last chance out of New York.

American Airlines has cancelled the 5 pm flight to Boston that he was hoping to board after standing in line for an hour.

Hurricane Irene is expected to roar up the East Coast, possibly hitting New York this weekend.
