Nine hurt as Irene’s waves cause havoc along Florida coastline

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — A large wave caused by Hurricane Irene washed eight people off a north jetty at Boynton Inlet, Fla., nearly causing one person to drown, The Palm Beach Post reported late Thursday.

One of the people swept off the jetty at around 5:00pm was taken to Delray Medical Center in serious condition, Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue spokesman Capt. Don DeLucia said, adding that the other seven victims suffered minor injuries.

Meanwhile, at Carlin Park in Jupiter Beach, a man feared drowned in heavy waves was later found alive more than a mile from where he went into the ocean, police told The Post.
