Yankees stuck in Baltimore, away from families

BALTIMORE — As of late Friday night, no Yankees player had asked Joe Girardi for permission to travel to New York in order to be with his familiy during Hurricane Irene.

“They can’t because they couldn’t get back [for today’s doubleheader],” the Yankees manager said.

CC Sabathia and Nick Swisher had their families with them in Baltimore for the weekend, but being separated from his family in White Plains weighed on Mariano Rivera.

“When things are like this I want to be with my family,” Rivera said.

Like the rest of the Yankees’ traveling party, Rivera was confined to the team hotel in the Inner Harbor yesterday awaiting Hurricane Irene’s punch.

Players were advised by the hotel to prepare for the worst. There were concerns about being without electricity or running water, having limited food and drinking water available and flooding.

Alex Rodriguez‘s solo homer in the seventh Friday night was his first since June 11 and halted a 96 at-bat homerless streak. He has 14 on the season. . . . Four of the Yankees’ five runs Friday night were delivered via homers. The Yankees have homered in a season-high 10 straight games and have clubbed 22 in that stretch.

Robinson Cano takes a 17-game hitting streak into today’s action. That’s one shy of his career high, which he has done twice.
