76-story bldg. a sky-gaper

The best spot to watch Irene unleash her fury stands 76-stories tall, can withstand Category 5 winds, and is the work of renowned architect Frank Gehry.

“I don’t feel afraid, even though we live on the 30th floor,” said Mike Thigpen, 51, a resident of the Manhattan skyscraper, the city’s tallest residence. “This is nothing. I did make sure to go out and get four bottles of wine.”

New York by Gehry, on Spruce Street, opened early this year. Most residents who spoke to The Post said that because the building was done by Gehry — and because they’re in the safe Zone C — they weren’t worried.

“If you look at the building’s Web site, it says that this building can withstand a Category 5 storm,” said CPA Dan Carey, 50. “We’re only expecting a Category 1, so we’ll be fine.”
