Rosenfels could lose race to Carr for Giants backup QB

The Giants’ backup quarterback job might be slipping away from Sage Rosenfels, who played well in the preseason opener but saw David Carr play even better (9 of 11, 84 yards, two touchdowns) last week against the Bears.

Tonight against the Jets, Carr will again get the call after Eli Manning. Rosenfels has been ill with strep throat and also has some back issues.

With another solid outing, Carr could take firm hold of the job he filled in 2008 and 2009 before leaving for the 49ers. Rosenfels, acquired in a trade with the Vikings, served as Manning’s backup last season.

It will be interesting to see how coach Tom Coughlin opts to allocate his quarterbacks in Thursday night’s preseason finale against the Patriots. Manning is not expected to play much or at all.

Coughlin probably wants another look at rookie Ryan Perrilloux, who is a strong candidate for the practice squad.

Coughlin likely owes it to Rosenfels to give him what would be a last chance to make an impression before the decision is made.

The first roster cutdown from 90 to 80 players is tomorrow. . . . RB Ahmad Bradshaw, who took a knee to the back vs. the Bears, is not expected to play tonight against the Jets. Figure to see plenty of young running backs Andre Browon and rookie Da’Rel Scott.

As of yesterday afternoon, MetLife Stadium did not lose power or incur any damage from the hurricane.

The punting derby is wide open, with veteran Steve Weatherford and second-year Matt Dodge bringing out the best in each other.

There is no room for either to falter. There’s a feeling the coaching staff wouldn’t mind seeing Dodge retain the job, as he’s a 2010 seventh-round draft pick and the team did endure great growing pains with him.

Domenik Hixon leads the Giants with six receptions in the preseason and it is looking as if he is the runway leader for the No. 3 receiver job. . . . WR Devin Thomas took a firm hold of the kickoff-return job with a strong showing last week. The punt-return job remains wide open.

Rookie WR Jerrel Jernigan was given a long look this preseason but has not been impressive. . . . Rhys Lloyd will again handle the place-kicking duties in place of Lawrence Tynes, who remains out with a thigh contusion from the first preseason game.
