Scenes from a tempest

Hurricane Irene could be a hull of a problem for the already damaged ships at South Street Seaport.

Members of Save Our Seaport said yesterday that the lightship Ambrose’s docking ropes are inadequate, and that the ship might break free and crush the nearby Schooner Lettie G. Howard.

Also, they say that debris and equipment has not been secured aboard other ships, and that the 19th-century schooner Pioneer’s sails were not properly secured.

School’s out — and thanks to Irene, it’s going to stay out a while longer.

NYU, Fordham and other college campuses have put off move-in day, which had been scheduled for tomorrow.

Instead, students will be let in to dormitories on Monday — a gamble by campuses that the storm won’t do much damage.

The city is already bungling one part of its storm response — on its Web site.

A page on NYC.gov that helps people learn if they’re in an evacuation zone was still balky yesterday.

The evacuation-zone finder crashed completely for several hours on Thursday, and ran slowly yesterday. It seemed to be working better late yesterday afternoon.

Yo, dude — surf’s up. Way up.

Surfers rode 4-foot swells off Long Beach yesterday, getting in their last board time before the big storm hits.

“Irene’s going to be a big mess,” said Ian Blair, a 52-year-old English teacher who was carrying his surfboard along the boardwalk. “Today’s the day to be out surfing. Sunday? You’ll die.”
